What Is Muscular Dystrophy
Is there any treatment for muscular dystrophies?

There is as yet no cure for any of the muscular dystrophies. Medical management, ideally at special clinics for muscle disorders, includes physiotherapy and a variety of other professional activities directed at maximising the independence, physical capabilities, general health and quality of life of affected people.

These efforts, although not curative, are effective. They do contribute in some degree to the achievements of people with muscular dystrophy, which are so often a source of inspiration to others.

What research is being done?

The amount of research devoted to the muscular dystrophies across the world is enormous. Every year, millions of dollars and thousands of research workers are involved.

The discovery of the primary defect in Duchenne and Becker types of muscular dystrophy has spurred research workers to use their knowledge to find a cure, to use it to improve methods of prevention and to apply the same successful research methods to achieve similar results with other sorts of muscular dystrophy.
